KACTE
Summary of 2002-2003 President Dr. Phyllis Alderdice led KACTE through a successful year in 2002-2003. KACTE membership has remained stable at around 650 members. And as of February 2003, Kentucky had a total of 643 ACTE members. KACTE Executive Director Mike Stone and Assistant Executive Director Kris Stone, as well as other members, attended the ACTE Region II Conference in Wilmington, NC, during the fall. Las Vegas hosted the ACTE Annual Convention December 12-15, 2002, where attendance was reported to be 6,695. Sherry Baber reported 98 Kentuckians attended; many were actively involved in the convention. KACTE was honored as a Gold Award Quality Association for meeting minimum membership service requirements. Student Organization Leadership Day at the capital on February 13, 2003, was attended by 640 participants and well received by representatives and senators. ACTE’s annual Policy Seminar was held March 16-18 in Washington, DC. A number of Kentuckians, including several board members, attended and visited with legislators and their staff members. This year KACTE was given the operation of the annual summer conference: Summer Learning Program: The Power of 3—Engaging Educators, on July 21-23, 2003, in Louisville. KACTE served as the focus for planning and facilitating the program. Program areas and organizations were allotted time for their meetings. Work by teachers on curriculum alignment was a focus in the secondary program areas. 1,500 educators attended the conference, and 150 exhibitors were present with 77 exhibits. KACTE maintains a website at www.kacteonline.org. There was no printed newsletter this year due to funding shortages. Plans are to make it available on the website. Although no taxes are owed, KACTE has learned it must file a report with the IRS each year; this was begun this year. Status of Perkins Act:
